Google Plus cover photo design tips

The new Google+ cover photo size is HUGE with lots of room for branding potential.

If you are asking about the size of the new Google Plus Cover Photo, it is up to 2120px wide by 1192px high or a similar 16:9 ratio.

You can upload a photo or choose one you have on hand, but for best results start with a 2120px by 1192px canvas in your favorite photo-editing software such as Photoshop. Your final image will most likely be scaled down, but by starting with a large image, you will be less likely to lose resolution during scaling. (You want to allow for folks with large monitors to view your nice and HUGE cover photo without it losing quality.)

Yikes! When did I need to update my new Google Plus Cover Photo!?

I agree with Gary Hyman that “this change came out way too quick.”

But I decided to throw something together. Playing on the fact that everyone across my social media networks said that the Google+ Cover Photo is HUGE, I first designed this:

…But quickly saw that the default display of one’s Google+ profile page does not include the entire cover photo. A snapshot – more like the lower two-thirds – is all that is in view at first.

Here’s how my initial attempt got “cropped” for most viewers:

After some design tweaking, I settled on my new Google+ cover photo for this latest layout:
My first official Google+ cover photo design ... It's HUGE!

I still can’t believe how HUGE it is. But I like it… Something different with less restraints than the Facebook cover photo designs I design.

Ready to design your own Google+ cover photo and need a guide? I’m sharing the template I created that worked best for me. I’ve included the PSD I created, plus a JPG you might find helpful if you don’t have Photoshop.

I was so excited to see your post, Rob. I mean that seriously! Today I have some time blocked to redesign all of the covers (4 in all!). I’m thrilled to have all this new space and grateful for your advice. It is going to save me a ton of time with tweaking. Thank you so much.

Hi Rob,

Thanks so much for the info and the template! Having the exact measurements was very helpful and although I didn’t use the template for upgrading my Google cover image I will use it in the future to make some updates. Again, thanks!

Thank you Rob. Well done.

Just an FYI, I wanted to “bookmark” this article to my +1 column and I can’t do that unless you have a bookmark button with a counter. The ones without counters only have the choice of posting on your G+ wall or nothing.

Pleasure to find and circle you.

Great design, Rob! I discovered this on Thursday morning and posted too. Except I made mine half size. You’re right tho, it does enlarge on bigger screens, tho it seems to look fine. Will go circle you!

Great post Rob! Is this the Google+ cover photo for personal and page profiles? Are they different in size?

Thanks,

Rob: great post. I really appreciate the guide you gave (through your first attempt at the new humongous cover)! Please don’t check mine, it’s more like your first one still. I’m not a happy camper with this update. Why should they make it so stinking difficult? I mean, is user interface something we don’t think about? I’m trying to figure out how (un) happy people are with the change, and set up a “Vote for (or against) the new Google Plus Cover Photo Size” at my blog, here: http://ronvanpeursem.com/2013/03/vote-on-the-google-plus-cover-photo-size/

Hey, Rob;
You asked about the voting results. I used a scale of 1 to 5. A vote for “1″ meant you really liked the change. A “5″ meant you were quite unhappy. I got just one person who, obviously being facetious, voted #1. All the rest were 4s and 5s (mainly 5s), except for one person who added her own extreme vote at “105″. I’m sure my results are skewed because I was attracting readers who were not happy campers!

Thanks for the Template Rob. After several hours trying to get my cover photo looking right I finally got it to work but then forgot the sizes I used so your template will help next time I try it.
